The airports of Paris: Charles de Gaulle/Roissy, Orly, and Beauvias

There are two major airports near Paris. The largest is Charles de Gaulle Airport (also called Roissy). Smaller Orly Airport handles mostly domestic and European flights, and some no-frills/low-cost airlines.

(If your itinerary says "Paris-Beauvais" congratulations: you are on a no-frills airline like Ryanair or Wizzair and you're actually landing at an airprot 90 miles north of Paris; » more)

Charles de Gaulle Airport (Roissy)

Most international flights land at Charles de Gaulle Airport (tel. +33-(0)1-70-36-39-50; www.aeroportsdeparis.fr), also known as Roissy, 14 miles northeast of the city.

Connecting Roissy Airport and the Paris city enter

Here are the different ways you can get between Roissy airport and the Paris city center. All travel times are approximate, since they depend on your actual destination in the center (and, except for the RER, also on traffic).

What's the best way to get from Charles de Gaulle Airport to downtown Paris?

The best way to get downtown from the Paris airport is either:

The RER has two stops at CDG airport:
•
"Aéroport Charles de Gaulle 1" - Serves Terminals 1 and 3.

• "Aéroport Charles de Gaulle 2 - TGV" - Serves terminals 2 (A to F). To get to Terminal 2G, get off at Terminal 2C (entrance 4) and grab the free N2 shuttle (adds 15 min. to the trip).

Are there buses to the Paris airport?

Cheaper than the RER—but not quite as frequent and taking twice as long—are the many buses that connect CDG with Paris. Normally, I wouldn't bother with a bus—but the RER does go en greve (on strike) regularly, so knowing your bus options is handy (certainly has saved me from missing a flight on occassion when the RER has suddenly stopped running).

What about a taxi from the Paris airport?

A taxi is the worst option. Way too expensive. It costs four as much as a private transfer, which amounts to the same thing (but which you do need to arrange ahead of time).

Orly Airport

Some charter flights, as well as many national flights, land 8.5 miles south of town at Orly Airport (tel. +33-(0)1-70-36-39-50; www.aeroportsdeparis.fr).
