Built in 1634 as a Jeu de Paume court (a precursor of tennis), this hotel is a successful marriage of 17th century wood beams and plaster with 20th century burnished steel and glass.

The impressive airy, three-story ancient wood skeleton inside today incorporates public lounges, an indoor breakfast terrace, a hanging corridor, and a glass elevator, all to marvelous effect.

Most accommodations are on the cozy side of medium, but the simplicity of the stylishly modern decor under hewn beams keeps them from feeling cramped.

The three standard duplexes with spiral stairs are roomier (and don't cost any more than a double), but for true bliss check into the suite, a duplex with a lounge below and bedroom above, two baths, and a private terrace overlooking the small stone garden rimmed with flowers and where guests can breakfast in fine weather.
